A Valentine Prayer for the Earth
This Valentine’s Day weekend, Interfaith Power & Light (IPL) is inviting everyone to “make the Earth your Valentine.” From all over the globe people of faith are focusing on climate change with two big IPL events: the 2015 Preach-In, and the Valentine’s Day Climate Prayer.
Focusing on the message of climate justice and loving God’s Creation, the 2015 National Preach-In on Global Warming is happening this Valentine’s Day weekend. Faith communities of all religious traditions are invited to participate, and Interfaith Power & Light and its 40 state affiliates are aiming to sign up 3,000 houses of worship to preach or hold educational events.
Valentine’s Day Climate Prayer
“The Preach-In is our most popular event of the year, hands down,” said organizer Andree Duggan. “We’ve learned a lot from our congregations about what they need from us, and we provide everything from sample sermons and prayers, to bulletin inserts and post cards to senators. There’s something very powerful about knowing thousands of congregations are preaching about this issue at the same time. And this year we’ll be adding a synchronized prayer for climate action on Valentine’s Day.”
The Valentine’s Day Climate Prayer is a new event bringing together over 100,000 people of all faiths to pray for climate healing. As IPL says, “At noon local time on February 14th, people around the world will pause and take a moment to feel the power of prayer and to share their thoughts online as inspiration and encouragement for our work to protect Creation. It will be an interfaith, global climate prayer reminding us to take our responsibility for protection of Creation beyond our congregation walls.”
The National Preach-In on Global Warming
This is the 5th annual National Preach-In on Global Warming. It has already inspired nearly 2 million people of faith, with sermons, forums, adult classes, and other such events planned for the upcoming weekend. Last year over 70,000 Valentine postcards were sent to U.S. senators, and thousands have already sent Valentine postcards to their senators this year, urging climate action.
The IPL Preach-In wants to mobilize “people of all faiths in congregations across the country to urge political leaders to address climate change on behalf of future generations and all of God’s Creation.” Ninety-percent of all major faith traditions are represented in this event, and most have issued climate statements about the moral imperative to act as responsible stewards of the Earth.
This year’s Preach-In is anticipated to be IPL’s biggest year yet. If your and/or your faith community would like to participate in the Preach-In on Global Warming, visit www.PreachIn.org. From there you can register for access to a kit and free online resources that include “Love Creation” valentines for U.S. senators.
