With the weekend comes the opportunity to unwind and enjoy the simpler things in life. Let the stress of busy weekdays ebb out with Friday’s tide. In what is shaping up into a nice Saturday series, the following Scriptural verses and accompanying images are offered for peaceful contemplation on Creation.

Each weekend, God willing, I will share verses from various faiths about the Earth, creation, nature, creatures, and humankind’s role as stewards, joined with beautiful public domain images. Please leave a comment below with your favorite verses and their source, if you’d like to share, too. Feel free to download and share the images, and don’t forget to hit the social media “share” buttons, as well!

Creation & Stewardship in the Hebrew Bible/Christian Old Testament Bible

This weekend, our verses to ponder come from both the Hebrew Bible, and the Christian Old Testament Bible. The Christian Old Testament is in fact the entire Hebrew Bible, known in Hebrew as “Mikra” (“what is read”). Of the Hebrew Bible, the Jewish Torah (which means Teaching) is the first five books. The rest of the Hebrew Bible is divided into the Nevi’im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). All of the verses below come from the Hebrew Bible.

Jewish scriptures on Creation and humankind’s role as caretakers of the environment are equally respected and revered by Christians and Muslims alike, as Christianity and Islam commands their followers to accept the Hebrew Bible as originating from the Word of God.

Peace and blessings to you and your families – Happy Saturday!

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [Genesis 1:1]

It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding stretched out the heavens. [Jeremiah 10:12]

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands [Psalms 19:1-4]

For the Lord is the Great God. In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. [Psalm 95:3-6]

Then God said, let Us make man in Our image, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and the birds of the air over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. [Genesis 1:26-31]

Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these?  He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of His might, and because He is strong in power not one is missing. [Isaiah 40:26]

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. You return man to dust and say,  “Return, O children of man!” [Psalms 90:1-3]
