Jimmy Carter, a Leader on Environmental Issues

By Trikosko, Marion S. [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsFormer president Jimmy Carter is an outstanding leader on environmental issues. Like Desmond Tutu and Pope Benedict XVI, he is a man who successfully blends faith and respect for nature to enact real change in the world. Raised a Southern Baptist, the man is a tireless advocate for social justice and peace. His work since leaving office has made Carter a renowned figure and one of the most successful ex-presidents.

The 39th president has always been passionate about the environment. He installed 32 solar panels on the White House roof during his presidency — which Ronald Reagan was quick to remove when he took office calling them “just a joke.” He also created the Department of Energy and implemented the first standards for fuel-efficient cars.

Originally a peanut farmer, Carter eventually got into politics. During his presidency, he helped to pass several laws to benefit the environment. Since his departure from office, he has gone on to form the Carter Center, an organization dedicated to human rights and reduce suffering in the world through a number of peace and health programs.

In addition to his center, Carter continues to voice his beliefs on the current issues facing our nation. He pushes for renewable energy and has urged President Obama to reject the Keystone Pipeline.

Because we are now running out of gas and oil, we must prepare quickly for a third change, to strict conservation and to the use of coal and permanent renewable energy sources, like solar power.

Carter is a man who lives by his values, practicing what he preaches. He is a true voice of reason in all the political division going on these days. What’s more, his faith is evident in everything he does. He lives by his convictions as seen with his continued efforts at social justice, his support for women’s rights, and outreach to bring peace and love to the earth.

Like music and art, love of nature is a common language that can transcend political or cultural boundaries.

Jimmy Carter is a shining example of how spirituality and love of the environment can intertwine to make the world a better place. He leads by example and has written many books on world issues. An environmental advocate, he continues to be an inspiring leader.

It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature’s gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.
